What is a Physical Therapist?

Physical therapy graduates undergo 6 to 7 years of education and training to become a clinical Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT).  Our role is to help you physically improve and recover from any condition in which the muscles, bones, joints, or nerves have been injured or damaged.  Whether it’s pain, weakness, or loss of balance confidence, our expertise provides interventions to improve you toward getting back to your “normal”. For some, it means overcoming physical limitations to return to your favorite sports; for others, it means reversing the decline of your daily activities.

What Does a Physical Therapist Do?

Physicians often refer their patients for physical therapy; however, we can see you directly without a referral if your insurance allows.  Our skills as physical therapists focus on the consequences of how a medical diagnosis has negatively impacted the ease of your everyday function and overall physicality. We have experience working with hundreds of different diagnoses. We know that individuals, even with the same diagnosis, will need to be treated differently because no two bodies are the same.

When to Seek Treatment From a Physical Therapist?

If you have pain, or a condition that is keeping you from being active, our skills and expertise will be very useful to you.

For example:

  • A hip or knee condition makes walking or even getting out of a chair more difficult.
  • Episodic or chronic discomfort limits you in some way.
  • A nagging body part that has been holding you back from activities you enjoy.
  • Loss of balance and confidence has changed how you walk and move.

What to Expect with Physical Therapy Treatment?

To start, your PT will ask you specific questions about your current difficulties, including any tests or past treatments you had. We will capture baseline measurements to review progress and set goals that are unique to you. We will work with you to both educate and improve any abnormal ways you use your body that are perpetuating the pain & difficulties you have.

Typically, a minimum of 2 to 3 sessions per week are recommended for 3 to 4 weeks. This frequency is the essential step-by-step process your body needs to start to advance. One-on-one education, along with any practical retraining will help you in your recovery. A valuable part of your improvement comes from the teamwork you share with your PT, which includes your Home Program that gets updated over time.

After 3 to 4 weeks, your PT will compare your initial measurements for improvements made and assess if you have any remaining difficulties or complaints. Based on those findings, you and your PT will mutually decide on future visits. There is wide variability in how long each person might benefit from physical therapy; normally this can range from as little as 3 weeks to 3 months.
